You get to see firsthand the perspectives of the two main characters of the same events as well their individual emotional responses. May 26, Pages. Thi time there is NO third person involved. Sam wants to be a writer, but there’s only one problem. Still, it was done well and the book was so good that I didn’t really care that much. The way their stories are told respectively are as a form of diary entry. The story isn’t written like your normal everyday novel but as a series incocneivable journal entries from Sam and Lucy Sam’s are in normal type and Lucy’s in italics. Read it Forward Read it first. I enjoyed this, finished inconceifable just this afternoon.

Ellton are touching moments where you really feel how desperate Lucy and Sam are for a baby and just how hard and heart-breaking it is for them to have such difficulties. The youngest of four, he went to Godalming Grammar school, joined amateur dramatic societies and wrote his first play at Sam is a happy go lucky guy, but at the end of the day he is “just ijconceivable bloke,” willing to accept and jump-to, his wife’s every needs.


In a book about infertility, I’m sure you are supposed to root for the characters to get pregnant, but I found myself eternally grateful that they couldn’t reproduce. bfn


This isn’t high literature, so I can’t even convince myself that this was all part of Elton’s plot to somehow manipulate us into believing that Lucy wasn’t a real character until that point because Sam wasn’t paying enough attention to her. In the beginning I had nothing but inconcivable for her, by half way it all starts to wear a bit thin. At times it is quite gender-stereotyped: The book is set up as the two main characters’ diaries as they pursue fertility treatment.

This is what irritated me even more About Inconceivable Lucy desperately wants a baby. Overall iinconceivable is sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always compelling reading. The charactisation will make you ask questions of yourself as Elton is uncanny in his portrayal of human psychology and behaviour – it’s very Men are from Mars, Women are from Bej.

The first and biggest thing that irritated me about this book, told through dual consecutive diary entries written by husband and wife, was the voice of Lucy. Wie zu erwarten ist Sam davon zu Anfang wenig begeistert.

The characters were awful people, neither of them had a single redeeming quality. At first I must admit to finding this a little difficult to get into – I’ve never been a bit fan of prolonged monologui Ben Elton’s sixth book “Inconceivable” is the story of married couple Sam and Lucy and their attempts to have a baby. They break up, and the entire second half of the book is incredibly sad as Lucy hooks up with someone she works inconcsivable, Sam realises that he was neglectful of Lucy and wasn’t taking the IVF seriously, and although inconceivwble get back together and it ends with them happily about to have sex and try it all again, it really doesn’t feel like the story fully comes back from them breaking up.

The story has great one liners that will make even the person with the least sense of humour in the world to crack a smile. Typical Ben Elton of that time. He writes in a style that many writers have tried and only half have pulled off successfully. The passages also highlight to the reader how things can easily be misunderstood when each person doesn’t or can’t share their fears, dreams, incohceivable anxieties with other as well as the danger of not trying to see something from another person’s point of view.

Anyway I’m glad I came back to it because it really is excellent and very moving, and there was one thing that I really liked about it and was pleasantly surprised by.

And boy does Ben Elton dish it up a treat. Feb 27, Deborah Brannon rated it did not like it Shelves: Of course, credit where credit’s due: He’s exhausted, a bit clueless and endearing throughout.

Or was it the point that they were completely obsessed with themselves, completely absorbed in their own apparently miserable lives, that they couldn’t even once consider adoption to form their precious family unit? The World According to Garp. There are touching moments where you really feel how desperate Lucy and Sam are for a baby and just how hard and heart-breaking it is fo I felt somewhat nervous about this book.
