The second edition has an appendix that gives the simplified equivalents for the characters used in the books. There’s not much in terms of specific tie-ins between the Defrancis textbook and Defrancis reader. The Defrancis books are a carefully designed learning system.
You should also check out the newer Mandarin Companion series. The introductions in the various books explain the desired lag recommended to have appropriate amounts of grammar and vocabulary under your belt before you start the next book.
